Say What? - With Melanie Edwards

Say What? is a series of blogs answering questions about discernment and life in the MGL Sisters. This time, we meet Mel who currently lives in Melbourne.

What are three things about you that you want to share with us?

  • When relaxing I like to read, make cards or play board games
  • I have ten amazing nieces and nephews
  • I love WYD and am really lucky because I am about to go for the seventh time.

What do you think is one of the most important things you did as you were discerning?

I started to pray in Adoration whenever I could. I discovered that the quiet time with Jesus was so powerful, and I loved the opportunity just to be still in his presence. It was in this place that the gentle invitation of Jesus to become a sister became stronger.

What is one of your favourite mission experiences?

My main ministry at the moment is as a chaplain in a youth justice centre. There is a young man there who often asks me to pray with him whenever he sees me. Usually, this consists of me being the one to pray out loud. However, recently this young man spoke out his own prayer. It was simple, yet beautiful, and a tangible sign, I think of his growing openness and personal connection with God.

What do you love most about being a sister?

I love the opportunity to journey alongside so many people from all walks of life. It is such a privilege to witness them opening up to Jesus for the first time or deepening in their relationship with him.

What is one of your favourite quotes?

St Catherine of Siena is known for saying ‘If you are who you are meant to be you will set the world of fire’ What a challenge, yet what a gift to the world if we do!

What else do you want to tell us – in 100 words or less?

If you are reading this and are not yet sure what God is calling you to – I encourage you to keep asking, to spend quality time in prayer and to enjoy life in the present moment. God loves you and has amazing things in store.
