The thing that amazes me over and over again about this life is that it’s even possible!  I (or we) get to step off the conveyor belt of ordinary life (study, work, family) and live a life that is centred around Jesus to a radical degree.  And people think that’s so OK that they will support me (us) to do that! 

Instead of earning my living or doing something that’s pragmatically useful to society, I spend an inordinate amount of my day in prayer – something like four and a half hours a day!  And when I’m not talking to Jesus, I’m talking about Him – sharing the Good News of God’s love with others – or planning to talk about Him or listening to others talk about Him (in spiritual direction), or even learning more about Him. 

Now I’m not saying that none of that is useful to society.  Actually I’d argue that it’s possibly the most useful thing to society that there is.  But unless I get good at multiplying loaves and fishes one of these days, it requires a lot of other people to recognize the goodness of what we are doing and to practically support us so that we can give our lives to such things.

So what I love most about this life is the generosity of others that allows me to do the things that I am most passionate about.  They share in the grace and fruits of our work because they are the ones who actually make it possible.  I love that we’re in it together in this way, and I love that I get to hang out with such generous, Jesus-loving, practically-living-the-Gospel kind of people.  What a privilege!
